More To It Than Meets The Eye

“i’m selling my two worn-out old laptops on ebay. a big one here, and a small one here. i will only be removing financial information from these computers. all music, video files, writing, failed projects and abandoned comics will stay on them.” {From: boo hoo boo • i’m selling my two worn-out old laptops on ebay…}

When an artist sells his laptops. It think it’s quite cool what he’s doing, but it’s not something I would emulate–the thought kind of terrifies me. But I’m not an artist, and am not particularly brave.

Life’s Rich (And Trademarked) Tapestry

“Quilters with a certain penchant for copyright and legal wrangling are turning our open, creative craft into a mine field of rules, regulations, licensing, attribution, and copyright lockdown that it’s enough to make anyone set down their rotary cutter and sell their sewing machine.” From The Free Motion Quilting Project: Copyright Terrorism, via Techdirt.

Whoa. I had no idea the world of quilting was so contentious and litigious. I certainly hope the rest of the crafting community is not so inclined–and, incidentally, I also hope that whoever owns the patent on god’s eyes is cool, or else I know a whole kindergarten class from the 80′s who will be in big, big trouble.

Emotional Alchemy

Sometimes we have trouble accomplishing our goals. We struggle and we fuss; we fight and we worry; we expend tremendous amounts of effort with little to show for it. Instead, we then find ourselves standing in the middle of a mess, no closer to our aims than when we started. And then sometimes, we look up from our disasters and watch as other people seem to productively execute the very same actions that got us nowhere.

While it’s true that the more that we flounder, the more brilliant everyone else can sometimes appear to us by being merely adequate, but it’s also often the case that even our minor errors can make us feel extremely sub-normal. That’s an illusion, of course. Nobody is good at everything, and there are a lot of things that we are able to do easily that other people have trouble with, and vice-versa. But even if it’s a common feeling, the sensation that one might be underdeveloped in a basic skill that our peers seem to have down pat is a particularly nauseating one. It’s one thing to want to stand out from the crowd, but no one wants to stand out because they are inept.

Art And Pain?

Creativity is a mystery. Why do some people have the knack for coming up with new and interesting artistic ideas, while other people couldn’t manage a recognizable stick figure? After reading this article however, I am now convinced that creativity is a condition brought about by an abnormal brain. It certainly would explain why artists seem to always have a hell of a time keeping their shit together. So it seems that normal person + head injury = artist. Sorted.

Though not always. Have I told you about my head injury? Well, let’s just say that it did not turn me into a brilliant visual artist and leave it at that.

If You Wanna Ride…

Don’t inject yourself with horse blood. Egad! I feel bad enough that I’ve already made a sidelong heroin reference, but now I also have to contend with the fact that I may have gotten this song stuck in people’s heads–quite intentionally! I suppose then, there’s nothing to stop me from telling you that my original title for this post was going to be, “If You Wanna Ride, Don’t Ride The Red Horse.” Too late now, isn’t it? I’m kind of losing it, over here.
